PROPOSAL

Smile Co. Mouthwash Tablets

Dental Hygiene should be sustainable, so we fixed it.

Smile Co. aims to provide a new direction for oral care by re-evaluating and transforming the traditional approach to this product category into a more sustainable, convenient, and accessible product design through unique and innovative package developments. Smile Co. is focused on eco-concious product and package design of our daily oral hygiene and breath freshening products. 


BACKGROUND
Smile Co. introduces a new take on oral care centred around convenience and sustainability. The package features a resealable bag and ziploc mechanism, while the inner contents are individually wrapped using flow wrapping. The tablet wrapping is made from a seaweed biopolymer sodium alginate — a water soluble and edible film. This primary package format allows for an ideal user experience for traveling and gives a new range of accessibility not commonly found in typical oral hygiene product packaging formats.




PRODUCT CONCEPT SKETCH:



Traditional oral care products (i.e. mouthwash tablets) utilise a variety of packaging substrates ranging from conventional plastic packaging to recyclable glass jars. Smile Co. aims to use 100% environmentally sustainable substrates which involve wrapping individual mouthwash tablets in a water-soluble film wherein upon impact with water, the packaging completely dissolves leaving behind no harmful residue and minimising product/packaging waste. The secondary packaging is a biodegradable stand-up bag where the visual design will be directly printed using soy-based ink. The bags will then be filled with the individually-wrapped mouthwash tablets for ease of travel.



PRODUCT & BRAND IDENTITY
Smile Co. has given careful consideration to each graphic component of the visual packaging design in order to take accessibility and readability into account. For instance, high contrast colours (blue with white accents) were chosen as it is easily identifiable and are highly associated with oral care. The bold visual identity creates a strong and memorable brand perception that can catch a consumer’s eye online or in-store, without losing the recognizable nuances of traditional oral care packaging. Through this product, Smile Co. envisions a new packaging design technology for the world of breath fresheners by exploring water-soluble and biodegradable technology.
